(REGINA) January 20, 2022 - SaskMusic announced the winners of the 2021 Saskatchewan Music Awards through a streamed event tonight on their Facebook and YouTube channels (video above: https://youtu.be/qoGP6ikrsdo). The awards honour excellence and celebrate the continuing achievements of the Saskatchewan music industry.

“It’s been a particularly difficult two years for the live music industry worldwide, with the pandemic continuing to severely impact the activities and revenue of our sector, so it’s great to be able to show appreciation for the resilience of our creators and the great music being made here,” notes SaskMusic’s Lorena Kelly.

Performers for the event included The Garrys, Katie Tupper with vbnd, Flash Back, and Jake Vaadeland and the Sturgeon River Boys.

The first Indigenous Music Achievement Award was presented to Prince Albert’s Sheryl Kimbley. This award is intended to honour a long-term commitment to integrity and involvement in music which has inspired and uplifted others, and considers the individual’s work over their career.

It was also the first year for the category “R&B Artist of the Year,” recognizing strong growth in the genre within Saskatchewan. Award categories reflect musical activities that took place between April 2020 and October 2021 by individuals/bands and companies based in Saskatchewan, with Album of the Year criteria including albums released between October 2020-October 2021.

SaskMusic presents the fourth annual Very Prairie Music Summit online January 21-23. An educational event for the Saskatchewan music industry, Very Prairie is focused on career growth, business development and music industry best practices. National and international presenters will speak to an array of topics and provide practical and straightforward information. Musicians and industry at any stage of their career are encouraged to attend, learn and share. Registration for the event is free and is available, along with an event schedule, here.

SaskMusic would like to thank Creative Saskatchewan and FACTOR (The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings) for their support.
